Before its official opening, I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the museum through First Sight, a special one-day preview in August.
As told by museum curator, Charles Esche, Museum MACAN wanted to
introduce important events in Indonesian art history. The thorough research on
Indonesian art history resulted in some books and pamphlets archive from the
1950s until early 2000s, which were shown through glass boxes.
What differs Museum MACAN from
other museums are the collections. While others only presented local artworks,
Museum MACAN offered collections from Indonesia and around the world: Asian
countries, Western Europe, and United States.
Gehard Richter, Andy Warhol,
Takashi Murakami, and Jeff Koons, are some of the big names that are showcased
in the new art haven. It also featured commissions from local artist, Entang
Wiharso, and Yukiro Yanagi from Japan. Not only sculpture and paintings, Museum
MACAN also offers one of the highly anticipated installations, Yayoi Kusama’s
Infinity Room – Brilliance of The Souls.
Aside from the remarkable
collections, visitors are invited to join artists’ talks and explore the
artworks with guided art tour because education is the core mission of the museum.
Museum MACAN is commited to make art accessible to the wider public, especially
children, therefore it provides education program. The museum debuted Children’s
Art Space, an area dedicated to children, educators forum, school visit, and
education resource kit.
Discover the never-before-seen
collection of modern and contemporary art, while going back in time through exquisite
art pieces.
The inaugural exhibition “Art Turns. World Turns.” will be
on view until 18th March 2018 at Museum MACAN
from 10 AM – 7 PM.
